Conference Funding
1. Funding Sources:
A. University of California, Davis
University Writing Program (UWP)
Davis Humanities Institute (DHI)
School of Education
Graduate Group in Education
Technocultural Studies (TCS)
B. Registration Fees
2/3rds (66.3%) of conference funding will come from registration fees. This percentage is on the low end for Computers and Writing; previous conferences have had as much as 75% to 80% of the funding come from registration. Because of the strong support on campus for writing, technology, and hosting conferences, UC Davis is able to keep registration fees reasonable. Our multidisciplinary planning team is also able to draw in support from numerous campus and community groups.
C. Publishers
UC Davis will work with publishers and software vendors to set up display tables. Although we are only estimating $5,000 from publishers, we are working with publishing companies in k-12 education as well as the academic presses that traditionally attend Computers and Writing.
D. Grants
University of California, Humanities Research Institute (http://www.uchri.org/) encourages and funds multicampus projects; they have a cyberinfrastructure initiative and a digital media and learning initiative currently. The collaboration between University of California, Davis and University of California, Santa Barbara on the planning of Computers and Writing 2009 will allow us to pursue these grants. The Women's Research Consortium (WRC) would encourage a research strand on women's and girls' computing. Having Danah Boyd (see potential keynote speakers below) as a speaker would help develop this strand/aspect of the conference.
Davis Downtown Business Association has funded conferences and events that bring large numbers of out-of-town guests.
